EU Challenger Series Summer Split: addio sister-team!

Welcoming in old teams and new, we’re getting ready to kick-start the 2017 EU Challenger Series Spring Split starting on February 5.

The EUCS Spring Split begins on Sunday this week. Here’s an overview of the format and highlights of some of the changes for 2017. Stay tuned for our rundown of the Spring Split team rosters and full schedule, which will be released tomorrow.

WHAT’S THE FORMAT?

The format will stay the same as it was last year: 6 teams competing in a single round robin Best of 2 (Bo2). All matches will be played on Sundays starting from 15:00 CET on Feb 5. The top four teams at the end of the season will enter playoffs, while the bottom two will receive a spot in the CS Qualifiers. The same point system will be used to determine standings:

  • Win = 3 points
  • Draw = 1 point
  • Loss = 0 points

WHAT’S THE SCHEDULE?

The EUCS regular season will be on Sundays at 15:00 CET

  • Week 1: February 5
  • Week 2: February 12
  • Week 3: February 19
  • Week 4: February 26
  • Week 5: March 5

WHO’S PLAYING?

2017 EUCS Spring Split teams:

  • FC Schalke 04
  • Fnatic Academy
  • Millenium
  • Misfits Academy
  • Paris Saint-Germain
  • Team Kinguin

PLAYOFFS

Playoffs will have a slightly different format for this year. Instead of a Semifinal round followed by a Final, this year the top 4 regular season CS teams will face off in two Bo5 matches to determine the two teams that will enter the promotion tournament.

The first match of the Playoffs will take place on March 19, with the second following on March 26.

PROMOTION TOURNAMENT

The EULCS promotion tournament has a new format for 2017. The top two teams from CS will play the bottom two teams from the LCS groups in a dual-style, double elimination tournament bracket consisting of five Bo5 matches. Win twice and you’re in the LCS, lose twice and you’re in CS.

Between the two LCS Teams, the Team who won the head-to-head during the LCS Regular Season will be able to choose their opponent from the two qualifying CS teams to play in Match 1. The remaining LCS Team will face the remaining CS Team in Match 2.

The promotion tournament will be played on April 6-7 and April 13-14.

OTHER CHANGES

LCS-CHALLENGER SISTER TEAM POLICY

We’re introducing changes to rules around team ownership in two phases this year. In Spring Split, ownership of one LCS and one CS team is still permitted, but starting from Summer Split, owning only one team within either LCS or CS will be allowed.

HEAD COACHES

Similar to players in both LCS and CS, Head Coaches now share the same contract and salary requirements, as well as poaching protections. Head Coaches are listed in the Global Contract Database.

10 BANS

At the start of the year we introduced the 10-ban changes for pro-play, which includes Challenger Series as well, so this change will be implemented from Week 1 of the CS Spring Split.

WHERE DO I WATCH?

All matches will be broadcasted on Sundays from 15:00 CET starting on February 5. Head to watch.lolesports.com to catch the action live.
