Virus Infects Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Players, Activision Shuts Down PC Server: “No ETA for Restoration”
Virus on Modern Warfare 2 – On July 24th, a peculiar message was released on the official Call of Duty page, causing immediate concern among the gaming community. On Monday last week, Activision made the unexpected move of shutting down all game servers related to the PC version of the beloved title, Modern Warfare 2, from the franchise’s early Call of Duty era.
Initially attributed to generic “technical issues,” it was later discovered that the problem was far more severe. Apparently, a hacker managed to infect players’ computers using a worm.
For those unfamiliar, a worm is a highly destructive software capable of replicating and infecting multiple systems from a single point of origin. Once unleashed and infecting various systems, it becomes particularly challenging to stop the spread of such a virus.
The Perils of Online Gaming: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Servers Hit by Virus Attack
According to VirusTotal’s founder, Bernardo Quintero, this was the reason behind the MW2 server shutdown. On Twitter, Quintero explained, “The multiplayer servers of Call of Duty MW2 (2009) have been temporarily suspended due to malware that is automatically spreading to players’ systems. The worm was initially identified on VirusTotal on July 24th, 2023.”
As of now, the severity of the situation remains unclear, mainly because no data has been shared regarding the number of affected players. While it may not reach the vast numbers seen in COD Mobile or Warzone, it is undeniable that the issue could impact more players than initially thought.
At this time, Activision has only stated, “The problem is currently under investigation, and we hope to resolve it as soon as possible so that PC players can once again enjoy the MW2 (2009) experience on Steam.”
As soon as further details become available, we will not hesitate to report any new developments regarding this matter. Players are urged to stay vigilant and await updates from the official channels to ensure their gaming experience remains secure and free from harm.
